A rage room is a room where you are allowed, encouraged even, to smash things. Plates, bottles, old printers, the lot. You suit up, you pick a weapon, and you break stuff on purpose until you feel better. That's the whole idea.

How does a rage room work?

A real-life rage room (sometimes called a smash room or break room) is usually a small business that sets up a padded or tiled space and stocks it with things that are safe to destroy. You book a slot, and a member of staff gives you a short safety talk.

You wear protective gear: overalls, gloves, a helmet or face shield, and sturdy shoes.
You choose a tool, typically a bat, a crowbar or a sledgehammer.
You get a pile of breakables, like crockery, glass bottles and dead electronics.
You go to town for the length of your session, then someone else sweeps up.

How much does a rage room cost?

It depends a lot on where you are and how much you want to smash. Short sessions with a small box of breakables are the cheapest, and bigger packages that include furniture or a whole room cost more. Check the prices of rooms near you, because they vary too much for one number to be useful. Many places also do group deals, which is handy for birthdays and work days out.

Is a rage room safe?

A well run one is, because the staff control what you smash and what you wear. The risks are the obvious ones: flying glass and sharp bits. That is why the protective gear is not optional, and why you should follow the safety brief and never bring your own items to break. If you have a health condition, are pregnant or are under the venue's age limit, check with them first.

Does smashing things actually help with stress?

It can feel brilliant in the moment. Big, loud, physical release is satisfying, and a lot of people leave feeling lighter. Be wary of anyone who says it's a cure, though. Some research suggests that venting anger can keep you feeling angry rather than calm it, so think of a rage room as a fun way to let off steam, not therapy.
